Sudden stop of bike path for middle island

The bike path stops every time a middle island with a pedestrian crossing is present. This leads to the fact that the car drivers don't realize that there is not enough room and during the overtaking suddently realize that there is a middle island in the way. The reaction, sadly, is mostly to suddently turn right... where cyclists are. If cyclists go in the middle of the road just before the crossing to indicate that there is not enough room, they get honked. This is just dangerous and not viable.
I would rather share the sidewalk between pedestrian and bike, as the bike path is just too dangerous going up.

Whenever I encounter such an island, I always take the lane and switch to the middle. I have never been honked so far. But I also say: when they honk, they have seen you.

That's the way to do it

Unfortunately this is the standard "solution" in Switzerland and shows the importance of bicycle traffic.

For sure, Emasp and me can cope with this situation, but it is not suitable to convince elder people, children, fearful persons to ride the bike.

Jup... reason why I add them here :) It is not because it is the stantard solution, that we should continue do it that way. I personally started to go on the sidewalk going up there. With my slow velocity, I do not scare or endanger pedestrian. I prefer to pay the fine, rather than spend some time in the hospital.

This is the worst case and whenever we see plans with lane widths that don't allow the bike lane to be continued (if lanes are too narrow it is the bike lane which has to vanish, by law) we take the legal path with an objection. In recent times, planners have actually started to listen to us (as can be seen on the Rötelstrasse).

I recommend to take the primary position early enough and to signal you will take the position. You can do it like if you'd turn left but with a flat hand indication"stop - no overtaking".

If a vehicle still honks its horn I reply with a slow down gesture. This almost always has a positive effect.

Since there are so many crossing over that road, and being quite a good slope, I find it really difficult to manage everything at once. Also, I feel unwell to go in the middle of the road, if anything would happen I am not sure that it wouldn't fall back on me since "I crossed the way of the car"...

I find it very reasonable of you to use the side walk if you don't feel comfortable on the road.

Never ride on the sidewalk. It is forbidden and disrespectful for the pedestrians. Instead I recommend a mirror to check what’s behind early enough so you will be able to take primary. I know many cylists don't like a mirror on their bike but I have a speed pedelec myself and in urban areas, in city traffic, I would never be without a mirror. Just gold and very very helpful. Don’t expect a driver to stay behind if there is no place to overtake. Lots of them think 30 cm space is enough and will push through.
